Many children with learning difficulties will have Sensory processing difficulties, so may struggle with everyday experiences of movement, touch, sound, vision, taste and smell. They will either over or under respond which will affect their ability to integrate or tolerate different environments and people up close. Consequently these youngsters will often be on high alert which can lead to outbursts and melt downs. Many children display sensory behaviours such as mouthing non edible objects, rocking or pacing, lying over surfaces in an effort to self-regulate.
We will design individual short 20 minute sensory programmes to target the child’s area of need and address their sensory processing problems. Working with your TA’s we will train them how to implement specific activities to engage and support the child.
With some children the programmes can be integrated into their daily routine for example soft play, PE especially if staff availability is limited.
Programmes will be reviewed regularly to ensure the child is benefitting and progressing in order to up-grade the activities.
Our therapist can use equipment available in your school and advise on the most cost effective and user friendly equipment for school to purchase.
Is to reduce inappropriate behaviours and facilitate the child’s self- regulation to access classroom activities.
