What Is Sensory Integration?

The tactile, vestibular and prorioceptive senses develop in utero and begin to function very early in life, even before the visual and auditory systems. These basic senses work together in an integrated and automatic way. In everyday life we are not often aware of any one sense. This happens most importantly in the first 8 years of life when a child senses countless bits of sensory information that gives meaning in the brain.

Integration is the name given to the process where the brain gives meaning to sensation and enables us to formulate a plan of action. Children are designed to enjoy activities that promote brain development and therefore naturally seek out sensations to organise the brain.

Sensory integration is the bedrock of all our interventions at Tree Tops therefore all our therapists undergo in-house training along with formal post-graduate training on sensory integration.

"Through structure and pushing the boundaries each week we saw a huge change in our son’s relationships with adults and other children. Asking our son about the experience he will tell you that he loves attending Tree Tops because it’s fun and exciting and he can wrestle with the bear in Reception."

"The Think Sensory Not Behaviour Training helped me to think of the underlying cause of many of the behaviours we see in Nursery and lots of positive strategies we can use to prevent them and support individual children.”

"I feel enormously inspired and passionate about implementing strategies to support a wide range of needs for children in our school. I'm excited to work alongside the Tree Tops team!"
